Dave Chappelle’s Netflix special has been called out by LGBTQ+ organisation GLAAD, which believes the streaming service should live up ‘to their own standards’.
GLAAD, also known as Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, is a US LGBTQ+ media monitoring organisation, devoted to countering discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer individuals.
The organisation has put Netflix on blast after allowing Chappelle’s latest project, The Closer, remain on their streaming platform.
In a statement, GLAAD said: ‘Netflix has a policy that content “designed to incite hate or violence” is not allowed on the platform, but we all know that anti-LGBTQ content does exactly that.
‘While Netflix is home to groundbreaking LGBTQ stories, now is the time for Netflix execs to listen to LGBTQ employees, industry leaders, and audiences and commit to living up to their own standards.’
Netflix executive Ted Sarandos defended the comedian’s latest project, The Closer, and insisted it didn’t cross ‘the line on hate’ and will remain on the streaming platform despite the backlash from the transgender community.
In the special, he called himself part of ‘team TERF’, defended JK Rowling’s comments about transgender people, and said: ‘Gender is a fact.’
However, he seemed unbothered when asked about upsetting the LGBTQ+ community.
‘Gender is a fact. Every human being in this room, every human being on earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on earth. That is a fact. Now, I am not saying that to say trans women aren’t women, I am just saying that those p***ies that they got… you know what I mean,’ Chappelle said.
The stand-up comic said that he wouldn’t be doing any more LGBTQ+ jokes until ‘we are both sure that we are laughing together. I’m telling you, it’s done. I’m done talking about it. All I ask of your community, with all humility: Will you please stop punching down on my people’.
This is not the first time Chappelle, widely considered one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, has been accused of transphobia.
His previous Netflix specials included jokes about Caitlyn Jenner and the trans community.
