Sesame Street will be broadcasting a special episode starring Elmo for young children and their families during the coronavirus pandemic.
The half-hour special, titled Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate, will be shown across PBS Kids and WarnerMedia networks – which include HBO, TNT, Cartoon Network and Boomerang – in the United States next Tuesday.
Elmo’s Playdate will see the titular character be joined by many of his Sesame Street pals – including Cookie Monster, Grover and Abby Cadabby – with the show described to be set up like a ‘cosy video conference’.
The special has been produced to help kids who feel worried and nervous during the Covid-19 outbreak, with family members encouraged to watch along with them.
Sesame Workshop president Steve Youngwood said: ‘We hope Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate will entertain and inspire families at a moment when so many are feeling isolated and overwhelmed by current events.
‘With help from our distribution partners around the world, this special will encourage parents and kids to gather and relax as a family, in a way that only the Sesame Street Muppets can.’
The playdate is said to celebrate and applaud essential workers for their duties during the pandemic and will also feature special guest appearances from Tracee Ellis Ross, Anne Hathaway and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will join Elmo and the gang for games and singalongs of popular children’s nursery rhymes.
In a further statement, Lesli Rotenberg, the Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of Children’s Media and Education at PBS added: ‘PBS Kids is proud to offer Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate to every family across America on air and streaming platforms.
‘Wirth member stations in every community, PBS is commited to using the power of media to support families – especially those who don’t have access to broadband, cable or satellite and particularly during this challenging time.’
Sesame Street: Elmo’s Playdate will air on Tuesday 14 April at 7pm EST on PBS Kids and WarnerMedia in the US.
