Donald Trump threatened to halt all US funding to the World Health Organization after claimed the organization got the coronavirus ‘very wrong.’
The president hit out at the WHO for the second straight day at his coronavirus press briefing on Wednesday, accusing the organization of downplaying the threat.
‘As you know they made a statement…on January 14 I guess it was, that there was no human-to-human transition. Well there was,’ Trump said.
‘and they criticized me very strongly when I said we’re going to shut down flights coming into China, and especially certain parts of China…we were criticized very badly.’
‘The (World Health Organization) got it wrong. I mean they got it very wrong in many ways. they were wrong. They also minimized the threat very strongly and, uh, not good.’
Trump also accused China of not paying the World Health Organization enough money and asserted that the US pays gives too much funding to the organization.
‘So last year and for many years, hundreds of millions of dollars has been paid to the World Health Organization (by the US)….and last year was $452 million dollars and China paid $42 million,’ Trump said.
‘Before that it was $500 million and China paid less than $40 million. And before that it was similar numbers.’
Trump said his administration was currently looking into the matter to determine if funding to the WHO should continue.
The presidents attacks on the health organization come after he lashed out Tuesday at the WHO over similar issues at his press conference.
‘We’re ging to put a hold on money spent to the WHO. We’re going to put a very powerful hold on it and we’re going to see,’ he said.
‘They called it wrong. They call it wrong. They really, they missed the call,’ the president said, although he later backtracked and said, ‘I’m not saying that I’m going to do it. But we’re going to look at it.’
Trumps comments come despite the fact that WHO declared coronavirus a ‘public health emergency of international concern’ one day before the US announced its own public health emergency and weeks before Trump declared a national emergency.
