Howard Wolowitz from The Big Bang Theory was based on a real life person.
Bill Prady, one of the show’s creators, has a friend in real life called Howard Wolowitz, a programmer he used to work with at a computer company.
Together they helped develop and bring to life FilePro software in 1978.
Prady mentioned that working alongside the real life Howard and other colleagues at the company meant he had an ‘understanding’ of geeks.
He told Slate in 2009: ‘I had a short-lived career as a computer programmer.
‘I was a college dropout in New York City, working at a RadioShack, and I got involved creating the FilePro software for the TRS-80 at my friend Howie’s place in Brooklyn.’
Prady has referenced his old friend on social media when the popular sitcom was running.
On the show Howard is played by actor Simon Helberg.
The star has in fact met the real Howard, with Prady posting a snap of the pair together on Twitter in 2012.
The Big Bang Theory ended for good in 2019 after 12 seasons.
Simon has since been cast in co-star Mayim Bialik’s new comedy-drama As Sick As They Made Us.
It also marks her first ever foray into film writing and directing.
Mayim, who starred as Amy Farrah-Fowler in The Big Bang Theory, wrote As Sick As They Made Us and drew on her own experiences as a divorced mum trying to balance her work and personal life.
