Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project looks into the reality star’s new life as working towards criminal justice reform in the US.
But the star seemingly dropped a massive bombshell in the middle of the show when she quickly mentions that her husband, Kanye West, has a cousin who is in prison for murder.
While the blink-and-you’ll-miss it moment, Kim speaks out about how punishment in the US doesn’t always necessarily fit the crime, and in doing so speaks about how in the case of Kanye’s cousin it was considered almost fateful by the family.
But who is his cousin and what did he do? And what has Kanye said about him in the past?
Here’s what we know about him…
Who is Kanye West’s cousin and what was he convicted of?
Despite both Kanye, and now Kim, speaking briefly about him, Kanye’s cousin has never been referred to by name.
In fact, there’s very little we know about him beside the fact he was convicted of murder at the age of 17, which Kim brought up in the documentary.
Speaking to Marc Howard, president of the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice and director of Georgetown University’s Prisons and Justice Initiative, Kim said: ‘[Kanye’s] cousin has a double life sentence for a murder that he committed when he was 17.
In an even sadder twist, Kim said Kanye’s aunt has accepted her son’s fate and added: ‘She’s like, “I’m not even that distraught anymore. Like, that’s just what happens to the kids in our neighbourhood.” There’s just no other choice.’
The only other time anyone publicly mentioned the mysterious cousin was when Kanye brought him up in an interview in 2018.
Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel, during a rant about approaching Donald Trump with love, he mentioned: ‘My cousin is locked up for murder and I love him. So he did a bad thing, but I still love him.’
What is Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project about?
The Justice Project follows Kim Kardashian’s efforts to aid criminal justice reform, starting with her work with Alice Johnson – who was given a life sentence for a non-violent crime and with no prior convictions.
Over the course of the show, she begins to delve deeper into mandatory sentencing, forming bonds with women and convicted murderers who were forced into lives of crime or their eventual acts.
From speaking to President Trump to rallying what is needed to present a character case to the courts, Kim is seen ultimately helping free multiple prisoners from their sentences, which were deemed to high to fit the crime.
She ultimately started studying to become a lawyer during her work on the cases.
When is Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project available in the UK?
Kim Kardashian West: The Justice Project is available from Monday 6 April on streaming service HeyU.
It is a two-hour special that originally airs on Oxygen in the US.
