Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood dedicated his goal against Brighton to Angel Gomes ahead of the midfielder’s exit from Old Trafford.
Gomes is out of contract at Old Trafford and is set to leave the club tomorrow after failing to agree an extension with the club.
The midfielder is considered one of the finest players to emerge from United’s academy in the last decade and the Red Devils offered Gomes a contract worth £30,000-a-week to stay at the Theatre of Dreams.
However, having made just six appearances this term, Gomes has decided to leave the club and the news has come as a bitter blow to not only Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but those who are close to the midfielder.
Greenwood came through the ranks with Gomes and he put his side ahead on the the south coast with an exquisite finish at the Amex Stadium.
The 18-year-old wheeled away in celebration and made an ‘A’ sign in dedication to Gomes.
Fellow academy products James Garner and Teden Mengi shared a photo of Greenwood’s celebration on Instagram and accompanied it with a series of downbeat emojis, hinting at the pair’s sadness that Gomes has decided to leave.
Chelsea had shown interest in Gomes but Frank Lampard has denied the midfielder is on his way to Stamford Bridge.
Gomes captained England’s U17s as they won the World Cup in 2018 and he has various offers from across Europe.
Solskjaer hadn’t given up hope of a u-turn from Gomes but his exit is likely to be confirmed tomorrow.
