Murder in the Outback viewers were left both shocked and confused after some ‘surprise’ evidence came to light during the trial over the murder of Peter Falconio.

Peter, a British backpacker went missing in 2001 while on holiday with his girlfriend Joanne Lees.

According to Joanne, Peter was shot and his body was never found, while she claims that she escaped being abducted when she was rescued by a lorry driver.

However, during the documentary titled Murder in the Outback: The Falconio and Lees Mystery, Joanne admitted in court that during her relationship with Peter, she had an affair with a man called Nick.

Speaking to the police in an interview Joanne explained: ‘I had an affair with someone called Nick and it lasted a month. Pete didn’t know about it.’

‘In the pre-trial hearing, there was an unmistakable gasp in the courtroom when this sudden piece of surprise evidence emerged. It was a real bombshell, no one expected it,’ a journalist explained in the documentary.

Undated collect picture of missing English tourist Peter Falconio, 28, from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and his girlfriend Joanne Lees, 27, also from Huddersfield. * There is growing concern for Falconio, who is feared dead after he and his girlfriend Joanne Lees, 27, were flagged down on Saturday night near the tiny outpost of Barrow Creek, 175 miles north of Alice Springs, Australia. Mr Falconio got out of the couple's Kombi van to help the man who claimed he had engine trouble. Miss Lees heard what she thought was a gunshot, then the gunman returned to the van, punched her, tied together her wrists and ankles and forced her back into the vehicle. Miss Lees flagged down a passing van and raised the alarm, but 36 hours after the incident police have not been able to track down Mr Falconio. The Stuart highway between Tennant Creek and Alice Springs has been re-opened after an eight-hour closure but roadblocks in the area were still in place. 09/10/02 DNA taken from suspected rapist Bradley John Murdoch, 44, matches blood found at the scene in the Australian outback where British tourist Peter Falconio was believed to have been killed, police sources said. The partial remains of an unidentified man have been found in a dam in the Australian Outback, sparking speculation that they may be those of Peter Falconio. Police said the lower male torso was found Wednesday by a tourist in a 13 foot deep dam near the town of Marla in South Australia 750 miles away from where Falconio was last seen. *16/08/04: A man told a court he saw Peter Falconio a week after the British backpacker was allegedly murdered in the Australian Outback. The prosecution alleges Mr Falconio, from Huddersfield, was shot dead by a stranger who waved them down as they travelled along a remote part of the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory on July 14, 2001. Bradley John Murdoch, 45, is facing a committal hearing charged with the murder of Mr Falconio and the unlawful assault and deprivation of liberty of the tourist's girlfriend, Joanne Lees, from Brighton.

Joanne went on to admit to police that she didn’t initially tell them about the affair or the ‘secret emails’ because she didn’t feel it was ‘relevant’ to the case.

Viewers quickly took to Twitter after the programme, with many questioning why the evidence wasn’t revealed sooner.

‘How is having an affair with someone, just before your partner goes missing, not relevant?’ one viewer tweeted.

Another said: ‘Watching Murder in the Outback and can’t help but notice inaccuracies and gaps and the fact she had an affair.’

One added: ‘Personal. And not relevant? IT WAS RELEVANT!! Those emails are relevant!!!’

Other viewers just didn’t have a clue what was going on.

One tweeted: ‘Omg so many flaws and holes it’s mind blowing!’

In 2005, Bradley Murdoch was convicted with murdering Peter and assaulting his girlfriend Joanne on the remote Stuart Highway, Northern Territory.

The conviction was largely based on a DNA match on Joanne’s T-shirt.

Murder in the Outback: The Falconio and Lees Mystery returns on Tuesday on Channel 4 at 9pm.
