Shane Dawson has had all monetization removed from his YouTube channels in response to fresh backlash made against him.
The professional vlogger has three channels – Shane, Shane Dawson TV, and make-up channel Shane Glossin’ – which have racked up more than 34million subscriptions between them over his decade on the website.
But YouTube has now opted to step in and remove his ability to earn money from his videos, as videos containing blackface, sexualisation of Willow Smith (who was 11 at the time), and mocked racial stereotypes have resurfaced.
According to TubeFilter, YouTube has stated that action was taken because ‘a particularly newsworthy creator’s bad behavior could have a negative impact across its collective community of creators, viewers, and advertisers.’
It was added that despite the age of the videos, which go back several years, ‘it warranted punishment given that new information has emerged and its impact to the creator ecosystem is current.’
Going into effect on 29 June, it has not been confirmed the length of Shane’s payment suspension.
Shane has publicly apologised for his behaviour, sparking the backlash on 26 June when he acknowledged his past regular use of blackface.
‘Blackface was something that I did a lot. Like, I did it a lot on my channel. There’s no excuse for it, there’s literally no excuse,’ he explained.
‘I made a video six years ago talking about it and I gave excuses,’ the content creator continued. ‘I knew it was wrong, I knew I never wanted to do it again, but I didn’t do the work.
‘I didn’t actually look into the history of it and why it’s so wrong, and why people were so upset.’
But shortly afterwards he was called out by Jaden and Jada Pinkett-Smith for a past video in which he looked like he was masturbating to the music video of Willow Smith’s Whip My Hair.
As a result of his combined actions, Shane has been losing around 100,000 subscribers a day.
Today [30 Jun] Tati Westbrook came forward with her own allegations, claiming she was ‘gaslit and weaponised’ by Shane and make-up artist Jeffree Star to speak out against James Charles last year.
Shane’s finance Ryland Adams has slammed her allegations saying it was a ‘masterclass in manipulation’.
