A boy who was killed in a crash after a car mounted the pavement and slammed into a wall has been named as three-year-old Xander Irvine.
In a tribute, Xander’s ‘devastated’ parents described him as a ‘happy, bubbly, intelligent little boy’ who loved playing with cars and lego, adding that ‘he enriched the lives of everyone he met’.
Xander was out walking with his mum Victoria, 37, when the pair were struck by a car on Morningside Road, Edinburgh, on Tuesday afternoon.
The red Kia mounted the pavement and crashed into a charity shop front at around 2.30pm, with pictures from the scene showing the car crushed against the wall.
Xander and Victoria were rushed to hospital but the little boy suffered serious injuries and died.
His mother was also injured but she has since been released from hospital and left bereft over the loss of her little boy.
A 91-year-old woman who was driving the car was not injured, said police.
In a statement released through Police Scotland, the family said: ‘Xander Paul Thomas Irvine, three years old, was out for a walk in Morningside with his mother on Tuesday afternoon when a tragic accident occurred.
‘Xander was a very happy, bubbly, intelligent little boy who was very dearly loved by his parents Victoria and Paul.
‘Xander was a real chatterbox who just loved books, playing with all sorts of vehicles and his Lego. He really enjoyed life and he enriched the lives of everyone he met.
‘Victoria and Paul are devastated and feel as if their hearts have been ripped out. Xander will be so very sorely missed by them both and all his family and friends in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
‘What will we do without you, Xander?’
His family thanked the emergency services and members of the public who helped at the scene, along with hospital staff and police liaison officers for their help, and the public for their support.
Inspector Roger Park said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the family of Xander at this incredibly difficult time.
‘Inquiries into the crash are ongoing, a full forensic collision investigation was carried out at the time and officers continue to look at CCTV and dash-cam footage as well as tracing and speaking to witnesses who have come forward.
‘I wish to express my sincere thanks to the members of the public who intervened and assisted in the immediate aftermath of this tragic incident and to the police and other emergency services who were on the scene.’
