Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has highlighted the important role Mason Mount played in his old club’s win over Watford – even though the midfielder himself was surprised he was named Man of the Match.
The west London club slipped up in their last outing against West Ham but responded emphatically with a 3-0 victory on Saturday that sees them reclaim fourth place in the table as they fight for Champions League qualification.
Just before the half-hour mark, Chelsea opened the scoring as Mount fizzed a pass into Ross Barkley, who played in Olivier Giroud to fire a fine finish into the far corner.
The lively Christian Pulisic was bundled over inside the box shortly before half-time, with Willian converting the spot-kick, and Barkley wrapped up all three points late on with a thunderous finish.
Mount was handed the champagne for his performance though wasn’t entirely sure he deserved it, but Fabregas was in no doubt about how crucial the young midfielder’s creativity was to securing the win and providing the spark Chelsea needed.
‘It’s all Mason Mount here,’ tweeted the Monaco midfielder. ‘The pass between the lines made all the difference for that goal.’
Mount was taken aback to be named Man of the Match, telling Sky Sports afterwards: ‘I’m quite surprised I got Man of the Match to be fair!
‘I didn’t think I did much, I was just trying to keep the ball and keep it ticking over. I mean, Ross got a goal and got an assist, and the other boys, Oli, but yeah a brilliant performance.
‘We spoke before the game saying we needed to have that reaction and come out and show what we can do. It was a must-win and we did that. I think we were really clinical in the final third, taking our chances, and we could have had a couple more.’
Reacting to Mount not feeling he deserved such praise, Jamie Redknapp said: ‘I think one of the reasons that Mason Mount did get man of the match is things like this [the pass for the first goal].
‘His passes, the pace of that pass, sets this up. Nathan Chalobah tries to intercept it but because it’s so fast, it’s fizzed into him, it makes it difficult.’
