I May Destroy You has been hailed as a ‘historic moment’ for British TV by star Paapa Essiedu.

Essiedu plays Kwame, the gay best friend of Michaela Coel’s Arabella in the comedy-drama, which has won rapturous reviews from critics.

Kwame’s storyline in the programme helps to examine and question the issues of consent and assault in the gay dating world, especially with the invention and presence of hookup apps like Grindr.

Speaking to the Obsessed With… I May Destroy You podcast, the actor stated that he realises the impact the themes and discussions involved in the series will help change public perception.

‘It was a historical moment in British TV,’ he told host Sophie Duker.

‘I just felt it was so rich because of the story it told, not only with what happened to him but the depth of connection that those three central characters have together.

‘He can’t communicate that to Arabella because he knows she can’t deal with it at the time and he ends up taking the hit for it.’

Creator and writer Coel has been praised for the show’s singular, uncompromising vision, and she recently revealed that the BBC did not censor the content of the show at all.

‘Honestly, friends are like: “Oh, God, was it hard doing it with the BBC?”‘ she explained to Radio Times.

‘I’m like: “Guys, they let me [do anything]”. You know those things you put your toddler in – some sort of harness? The BBC took it off.’

I May Destroy You is available to stream now via BBC iPlayer. New episodes drop Monday and Tuesdays.
