Liverpool fans got a little carried away on Saturday evening after rumoured target Thiago Alcantara posted a cheeky picture on social media following Bayern Munich’s DFB-Pokal Cup win.
The Bundesliga champions added yet more silverware to their trophy cabinet thanks to a dominant 4-2 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup final, with Thiago coming on as a late substitute.
Saturday’s game could be one of Thiago’s last in a Bayern shirt, with the 29-year-old keen for a new challenge and, according to reports, having already agreed a move to Anfield.
If Liverpool fans weren’t excited by that prospect enough already, Thiago’s decision to post a picture of himself posing with the trophy alongside former Red Philippe Coutinho really sent them into meltdown.
Supporters flooded the comments under the post suggesting Thiago was leaving a little clue about his future, with one tweeting back: ‘This is cheeky and you know it!’
‘You’ve definitely done that on purpose,’ replied another fan, while others posted feinting gifs and mock-ups of Thiago wearing a Liverpool shirt.
Bayern have already confirmed that Thiago is keen to move on this summer, while they are willing to cash in if their asking price is met due to the midfielder’s contract expiring next summer – when he will be able to leave for nothing.
Bayern boss Hansi Flick confirmed after the match that Thiago has been tempted by another league, though still hopes to convince him to remain at the Allianz Arena.
Asked about his rather poignant hug with Thiago at full-time, Flick said: ‘He is exceptional. I try to keep the team together. He has got a strong identification with the club.
‘It’s important to see that his level is at 100% again. In his short time today on the pitch, he was important for us.
‘I know that you can flirt with other leagues when you reach a certain age. But I will try everything to convince him to stay.’
Speaking about David Alaba too, he added: ‘I’ll do my best and try everything to keep both players. I don’t know the current state of affairs and I know that it’s a bit more difficult with Thiago. I see things positively and always have hope.’
