Long Lost Family viewers were left in tears as a mother was reunited with her son after spending 57 years apart.

Richard appeared on the Davina McCall fronted show with the hope of finding his mum Patricia, following an unsuccessful 17 years of searching.

But it was all worth the wait, as the duo are now inseparable with a loving bond that is stronger than ever.

‘That hole the adoption left is not something that goes away,’ Richard told the camera before the reunion.

And Pat was overwhelmed when they finally came together, saying: ‘It was 57 years so to have him back in my life, it’s much better than I hoped for.

‘It’s as though he has always been there. I love Richard very much.’

However, just when things were going smoothly, Richard’s blood sister Dawn came into the equation and explained how it was having to adapt to knowing about her new brother.

‘Growing up as an only child it was my mum and I against the world,’ she stated.

‘I always knew mum had had a child but I never thought my mum would ever meet him. I didn’t understand why we’d want anyone else with us.’

But despite the unease at the beginning of meeting their new family member, the duo have put their differences aside and are now happier than ever.

Of course, the happy ending left fans in tears – as they flocked to Twitter to share their views on the emotional episode.

‘Always sobbing at #LongLostFamily,’ one wrote while another added: ‘There goes those dam onions.’

Someone else felt the same and said: ‘Why do I always watch #LongLostFamily…! I always end up in tears.’

And it seems others were in agreement: ‘#LongLostFamily should come with counselling, I’m an emotional wreck. Watching it and absolutely missing my own mum as everyone else is able to find theirs.’

Long Lost Family airs Mondays at 9pm on ITV.
