Manchester United have become the first team in Premier League history to win four straight games by at least a three-goal margin as they thumped Aston Villa 3-0.
The Red Devils have been in sublime form since the season restart as they challenge for a place in the Champions League next season and they met little resistance against relegation-battling Villa on Thursday night.
There was an element of fortune about how United opened the scoring, with Bruno Fernandes winning – and scoring – a controversial penalty, with Villa feeling the Portuguese star had manufactured the contact.
Villa sat deep in numbers but occasionally threatened on the break, with Trezeguet hitting the post, but their task was made very difficult just before the break as Mason Greenwood netted yet again.
The teenager collected the ball on the edge of the box, shifted onto his right foot and then drove a ferocious, unstoppable effort into the back of the net.
Villa came out after the restart looking like a beaten team, with United dominating proceedings and creating chances at will.
Their third goal arrived from a set-piece, with Fernandes and Paul Pogba combining; the January recruit played a cute corner to the edge of the box and the Frenchman curled his effort into the far corner.
Villa continued to offer little resistance and Anthony Martial nearly got in on the act moments later, smashing the bar after another clever pass from the instrumental Fernandes.
The result follows on from the 5-2 victory over Bournemouth and back-to-back 3-0 wins over Brighton and Sheffield United, meaning United have won by a three-goal margin in four straight Premier League games – a feat no other side has managed.
United have scored 14 goals in their last four Premier League matches, with their only blot since the season restart coming in their 1-1 draw against Spurs in the first game back.
With Villa looking incapable of mounting any semblance of a comeback, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was able to shuffle his pack, taking off Nemanja Matic, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Fernandes midway through the half, and the Red Devils held on comfortably to collect another win and move back to within two points of third-placed Chelsea.
