Mikel Arteta hopes the nature of Arsenal’s FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City will be enough to convince the Gunners skipper to remain at the club beyond the end of the season.
Aubameyang scored both goals as Arteta’s side overcame the odds to book a place in next month’s final against either Manchester United or Chelsea.
The prolific striker has just 12 months remaining on his current contract and is said to want a three-year deal worth £250,000-a-week to remain at a club which will not compete in the Champions League for a fourth consecutive season.
Speaking about his leading marksman’s future after getting one over his managerial mentor Pep Guardiola, Arteta said: ‘Hopefully it will help him to be more convinced we are going in the right direction.
‘The way he looks at it when I speak with him, he sounds pretty convinced. But if he can see the success and direction we are taking it is the right one, I think he’ll be more positive about it, yes.’
Victory at Wembley represented the second landmark victory of an impressive week for Arteta who also masterminded a 2-1 win over Premier League champions Liverpool on Wednesday.
‘I’m extremely happy and proud of the players. I’m sad that we can’t enjoy this moment with our fans,’ added Arteta.
‘That’s what you need against this team. You have to make the most of the opportunities and put everybody on the line. They are the best team in Europe in the way they play positionally.
‘There’s a great chemistry between them [Arsenal players] and they believe in what we are trying to do and you can see that. Congratulations to them.
‘They [Man City] are really good on the high press, as we are as well. We gave the ball away in dangerous situations and they are good in that transition moment but the first goal was really great. There are some things that we are trying to close down.’
