The Kemps: All True is a mockumentary of the highest, surreal degree, following brothers and former Spandau Ballet members Martin and Gary Kemp’s attempts to carve out solo careers in the wake of the band’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
Clearly inspired by a host of other shows and films – most notably This Is Spinal Tap – the film casts the Kemp brothers as exaggerated, fictional versions of themselves.
We followed Gary Kemp attempting to kickstart his painting career and Martin trying to establish the Gangster Cinematic Universe to rival Marvel and DC, as well as elaborating on his marriage to both Pepsi and Shirlie.
And for the fans at home, it seemed like some of them just couldn’t believe what they were seeing, if it was (comedy) gold.
‘Well this has taken me by surprise,’ one fan said. ‘Whoever is behind this is a genius.’
Another added: ‘Kudos to the Kemp brothers for going balls out and not being afraid to send themselves up.’
Of course, some were also drawing parallels between All True and the equally surreal Bros documentary, saying ‘the Bros brothers were funnier unintentionally, but the Kemp’s version is still unreal’.
This comes, however, after the director behind the project insisted that the film wasn’t inspired by Matt and Luke Goss’ documentary Bros: When The Screaming Stops.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Rhys Thomas explained that the idea for the film was forged before Matt and Luke Goss’s documentary Bros: After The Screaming Stops.
‘The Bros thing happened while we were in production writing it,’ Ryan said. ‘I don’t want people to think this is a spoof of the Bros documentary, this is its own thing.’
Rhys explained that The Kemps: All True is ‘different’ because the Bros ‘isn’t intentionally funny’.
‘This is written for them to be funny and it’s very much they’re involved,’ he said. ‘This is intentionally funny rather than unintentionally funny, we hope.’
The Kemps: All True aired on BBC Two and is available on iPlayer.
