Tammy Abraham will improve because of new Chelsea signing Timo Werner, says Ashley Cole

Ashley Cole hopes Timo Werner’s move to Chelsea ‘spurs on’ Tammy Abraham and says he can become a ‘better player’ alongside the Germany striker.

Werner officially joined the Blues on Wednesday, having signed a long-term contract with the Premier League club worth around £150,000-a-week last month.

The German’s arrival in west London could be seen as a blow to Abraham, who has largely impressed under Frank Lampard this season, scoring 16 goals in 40 appearances.

But Cole – who won the Premier League, Champions League and Europa League at Chelsea – has urged Abraham to see the benefits of Werner’s move.

Asked whether Chelsea’s deal for Werner will ‘spur on’ Abraham and improve him as a player, Cole told Sky Sports: ‘I hope so.

‘To have competition is healthy and they [Chelsea] won’t be so reliant on Tammy and [Olivier] Giroud now.

‘I’ve never been in that position but when you get top players in, you learn from them. That’s important.

‘He will develop and get better and have a little more hunger to play. I don’t think it will harm him.

‘Hopefully it will make him a better player.’

On Wednesday evening, Chelsea slipped to a 3-2 defeat against relegation-battlers and London rivals West Ham and are now just two points above Manchester United in fourth place.

Reacting to the loss, Lampard said: ‘We dominated the game in terms of possession, but make mistakes and teams will hurt you.

‘I’m not happy with any of the goals. You don’t get given victories for scoring two goals, you have to be better than that.

‘It is why we are fighting for top four not one or two, because we don’t get things right as much as the big boys do.’
