The Luminaries: Questions we have after episode 4 baby tragedy and Anna shock

There was more heartache for Anna (Eve Hewson) on The Luminaries as she was briefly reunited with Emery (Himesh Patel) – with dreadful consequences.

Anna and Emery have been searching for each other ever since they first met on the ship in episode one.

Fate – well mainly Lydia (Eva Green) – had been conspiring to keep them both apart and they were constantly missing each other.

But in episode four they came face once again, and Emery came to Anna’s rescue after she was attacked by an enraged Carver (Marton Csokas) who was on the hunt for Crosbie (Ewen Leslie).

In the scuffle between Emery and Carver, Anna, who is pregnant, was knocked out of a first floor window and fell to the ground, causing her to lose her baby.

Lydia was also on the scene looking for Crosbie’s gold, and Emery had plans of his own as he attempted to ‘fleece’ Carver for his part in what happened to Anna.

And then there was that very last scene…

Here are the questions we have after episode four of The Luminaries.

Where is the gold Lydia was raiding Anna’s room for?

Lydia wasn’t back out of mourning for Crosbie, but because she was hunting down the gold he had found before he died. She searched Anna’s room but came up empty. So if Anna doesn’t have the stash, where is it?

Has Anna gone off Emery now?

You would think that Anna would be pleased to see Emery, but she brushed him off when they were thrown together at a party put on by Mannering (Erik Thompson).

Maybe she simply lost interest? Or maybe she didn’t want him to know she was pregnant? In a flash forward to present day Anna seemed pretty intent on finding Emery, so maybe there is still something there.

Did Lydia kill Crosbie?

Anna outright accused Lydia of killing Crosbie because of the laudanum found in his stomach. The cunning fortune teller didn’t exactly deny it. In fact, Anna was convinced she had tried to frame her in Crosbie’s murder.

Did Lauderback kill Crosbie?

Or maybe it was Lauderback (Benedict Hardie)? He claimed he visited Crosbie’s cottage to apologise and that Crosbie was already dead when he arrived.

Swearing on the bible, he told police that he did not know who Anna Wetherill was – but he knew Lydia. Did she get his help in getting rid of Crosbie?

Will Emery get away with hiding gold from Carver?

Emery was hell bent on not letting Carver profit from their agreement to split any gold they might find. How long can he keep it up? Carver is definitely not a man you want to cross.

Who was Emery chasing and did he drown?

Anna found herself reliving what appeared to Emery’s memory of wading out into the sea. She could hear him calling out to someone, explaining that he can’t swim.

Going into the sea would be very dangerous for him – now he has vanished, could he have met a watery end?

Did Anna kill herself?

At her lodgings Anna was confronted by a man who created and sold the opium that was used in Crosbie’s murder.

She tried to stop him from ransacking her room by pointing a gun at him, but when he challenged her to pull the trigger she aimed the gun at her chest instead.

We heard the gun go off right as the episode ended, but did Anna take her own life?

The Luminaries airs Sundays at 9pm on BBC One with all episodes available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
