A hunter was gored to death by an elk the morning after he had shot it with a bow and arrow in an unsuccessful attempt to kill it.
Mark David, 66, was hunting in Tillamook County, Oregon when he was killed on Sunday morning by the animal.
David couldn’t find the wounded animal on Saturday before nightfall and waited to search for it the next day.
He went back out in the morning and used his bow again on the animal, but the elk charged the hunter with its antlers and gored him.
Oregon State Police said there was a property owner on the grounds who attempted to intervene, but David’s injuries were fatal.
The elk was also killed and the meat was donated to the Tillamook County Jail.
Last September, an elk violently charged at a woman in Estes Park, Colorado, injuring two people.
Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming has warned visitors to be careful around elks during mating season, which runs from early September to mid-October.
Male elks are known to clash their horns at each other in an effort to find a potiential partner.
The park tweeted a warning that elks can be ‘extremely dangerous’.
‘You are responsible for your own safety,’ it said.
Archery elk hunting season runs from late August until late September, according to according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife,
The state has 34 million acres of public land open to hunters. Tillamook is located about 70 miles west of Portland.
