Manchester United have opened talks with Ligue 1 giants Monaco over a £27million deal for defender Benoit Badiashile, according to reports in France.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to find a fast centre-back partner for Harry Maguire this summer and the Norwegian has scoured the market for available defenders.

Bournemouth captain Nathan Ake was under consideration but Manchester City have stolen a march on their neighbours by agreeing a £41million deal for the Dutchman.

United’s transfer policy has improved under Solskjaer, with the Norwegian uncovering Welsh winger Daniel James and dumbfounding critics with the signing of Odion Ighalo.

And TF1 claim the Red Devils have contacted Monaco over a deal for Badiashile, who is valued at £27m by the French giants.

United tend to identify multiple options for the same position and it’s possible that talks for one player are running simultaneously with negotiations for another.

Badiashile, 19, broke into Monaco’s side at the age of 17 and he already has 41 league appearances to his name.

His performances have captured the attention from a number of teams across Europe, with TF1 claiming that Bayer Leverkusen’s interest in the defender is the most advanced.

While Maguire and Victor Lindelof have formed a decent partnership, Solskjaer wants a faster centre-back alongside Maguire so that his side can play a higher line.

United finished the season with the third best defensive record in the Premier League: conceding 36 times in 38 matches during the campaign.
