Turns out romantic dramas aren’t just a chance for viewers to escape as Josh Duhamel shared the story about how he came to work on his new flick, The Lost Husband.

The romantic drama is adapted from bestselling author Katherine Center’s 2013 novel of the same name and follows Libby (Leslie Bibb) after the sudden death of her husband.

After struggling to live with her hypercritical mother, the mother-of-two jumps at the chance to for herself and her kids to move to Texas where they live with her estranged Aunt Jean on a farm in the Texas Hill Country.

As Libby is taught the ropes by a gruff farm manager (Duhamel) with tragic home life, she learns more about herself, her mysterious childhood and explores the possibilities for her future.

And the offer for his part as James O’Connor came at the right time for Josh as he told Metro.co.uk: ‘I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare for this movie. The truth is I was going through some stuff personally at the time when I got the script.

‘I wanted to go work just to get away from it and I really wanted to do something like this. It was the perfect opportunity. All it took was for me to read the first sixty pages to tell them “Yes, I’ll do it” because they needed an answer ASAP.’

He continued: ‘There was something really great about just going for it because I didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself. I decided I’m just gonna let this happen. It was great to know I wasn’t trying to force anything. And I put that into my performance as well because I tried to just react and work with the vibe.’

Josh added: ‘I just went with the flow of the character. It was kind of an experiment in a way to see what happens when you do the work and then just let it all go and just kind of not obsess about the outcome. I needed that.’

And the Transformers star revealed how he connected with his character as he opened up about taking time to reconnect with nature during the pandemic.

Speaking from his home in Minnesota, he explained: ‘What I love about Minnesota, about being here in my lake cabin in the woods, is that I’m just sitting here looking at the lake right now and feel so peaceful.

‘So it’s kind of nice when the character is into that as well. I’m similar to him in a lot of ways but it’s something that I’m working on [laughs]. I connected with the fact he’s got a lot of scar tissue and that’s hard to get through.

‘He’s been through a lot and I admire the guy because he doesn’t complain about it. He’s unapologetic and just lives his life. I like that… but we also get to see him grow and evolve.’

Josh continued: ‘I don’t always choose a role solely based on that. Sometimes it’s nice to play someone super cool and badass with fancy cars and all that stuff. But I always love parts that help you to reconnect with the important things.

‘Right now, I really value spending time with family and loved ones. That’s what this pandemic has been an opportunity for me to do. It’s been such a great respite from the craziness going on in the world.’

Josh – who shares son Axl Jack with ex-wife Fergie – also admitted he’s loved helping his 7-year-old get into nature in recent months.

He explained: ‘I’ve never been more grateful to have a place that I can go to, that I can bring my son to and teach him the stuff that I’ve learned grown-up. A bit like the movie.’

The Lost Husband is available to stream on digital platforms from September 7.
