Frank Lampard made three changes for Chelsea’s Premier League clash with West Ham, with Kai Havertz, Olivier Giroud and Reece James all dropping out.
Lampard has overseen back-to-back defeats in the top flight in the past couple of matches, as his side went down to Everton and Wolves.
Havertz and Giroud were dropped from the side that lost 2-1 to Wolves last time out and will sit on the bench on Monday night instead, while James is out of the squad entirely due to injury.
Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta came in for the injured right-back, while Jorginho and Tammy Abraham were preferred to Giroud and Havertz against David Moyes’ side.
And Lampard explained why he decided to make those changes.
It’s just a rotation and looking at different attributes of players against opposition,’ Lampard told Sky Sports.
‘I’ve got choices to make and whichever ones I make there’s probably a good case for others.
‘With Tammy, some energy in the team from the front.
‘Oli has been fantastic and Oli can obviously come in off the bench as well, I’ve got choices there pretty much every week in terms of those two.
‘And with Kai, similarly, I’ve got midfield players who are competing.
‘I have to have a good level of competition. Nothing against Kai, he’s finding his feet and he will find his feet.
‘It’s just the midfield I chose tonight.’
