Holby City review with spoilers: Sacha’s daughter Beka dies as Jodie poisons her?

Is Holby City the most dangerous hospital in the country? It was risky enough when there was just Cameron (Nic Jackman) around, unpicking stitches and ‘allowing’ people to die whether they wanted to or not (usually not).

Now we can add Sacha (Bob Barrett)’s new fiancée and hospital volunteer tea lady Jodie (Sian Reese-Williams) to the list of risk factors – as we’ve just watched her poison Sacha’s beloved daughter, Beka (Francesca Barrett).

This is apparently what happens when you try to come between Jodie and her man, so the likes of Dominic (David Ames), Donna (Jaye Jacobs), Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw), Lucky Simpson (Vineeta Rishi) and especially Jac (Rosie Marcel) might want to avoid any tea dispensed by the tea lady.

They’ve all had a go at reasoning with their grieving friend, with Dominic asking Sacha whether he might be rushing into things with Jodie. ‘When you know, you know,’ replied Sacha. ‘I did know,’ said Dominic. ‘I was her bridesmaid. I dressed her on the day of her wedding. Your wedding.’ This reference to Essie only made Sacha angry, because he can’t bear to hear the truth.

Beka got a bit closer to getting through to Sacha, and this was the threat to Jodie. She tried giving Beka a gift of a little light-up Christmas tree and when Beka refused it, Jodie crushed it in her hand until she bled.

This is very much what we’re dealing with. So will Beka be ok? Will Sacha realise what Jodie did? And will it be the wake-up call he needs?

Things aren’t a great deal safer on Darwin, where Kian (Ramin Karimloo)’s resolve to stay drug-free lasted as long as it took for his dealer Sarah Jane (Rosa Escoda) to arrive with more pills and an unconscious MP, who was another regular customer of Sarah Jane’s and had overdosed.

This would be a major scandal if discovered, so Sarah Jane called in favours from Kian to keep it all hush-hush. The pressure got to him and it wasn’t long before Jac noticed he was pale and sweaty, and he promptly went off to medicate himself back to non-sweatiness.

By the end of the episode, after the MP had had Sarah Jane arrested in the hospital garden, Kian decided to bin his pills again. The love of the glorious Jac Naylor would be enough to ease his troubled mind, he decided. But perhaps not, as he was last seen getting the pills out of the bin again, just in case.

Cameron in Holby City
Cameron’s smug swagger (Picture: BBC)

Now that Cameron is an advisory member on the board he’s acquired even more of a smug swagger but in other respects hasn’t changed a bit. When Lovely Louis (Tyler Luke Cunningham) asked him to take some ideas to the board, Cameron did so – but portrayed them as complaints, because he doesn’t like Louis.

Nicky (Belinda Owusu) overheard Louis telling Chloe (Amy Lennox) about this and the two friends had words. Then Nicky reported the words back to Cam. His explanation was that Chloe was jealous of Nicky and Cam being a couple. When Chloe told them she was going to stay with Ange for Christmas she suggested they might want her to move out permanently.

I think she was hoping they’d say no, but they didn’t. Cameron looked even more smug than he had earlier, but Chloe informed him that it’s only a matter of time before he slips up.

And we know that Max (Jo Martin) has been secretly shouldering the hospital’s budget limitations by paying for PPE and agency nurses from her own account.

Inevitably, her account has now run out of money. Fletch, not realising that Max has been paying for everything herself, was angry with her when she said they couldn’t afford any more agency staff. Poor Max.
