Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has revealed that there is a huge and ‘high octane’ storyline in the pipeline this year for Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) and Simon Barlow (Alex Bain).

After a traumatic year that saw Leanne lose her beloved son Oliver, Simon steps up to be there for her as she struggles with her grief and holding everything together.

But as previously hinted by Jane in interviews last year, the death of Oliver would spread out into a number of separate strands – with Iain now confirming that Leanne and Simon’s next stages in particular would be part of a huge and thriller-like storyline.

He told Metro.co.uk: ‘What we try to do with Simon and Leanne was find a way to play their grief differently. It starts small but turns into a colossal, thriller-ish high octane piece that plays over six months.

‘Driven by grief, Simon is in an escapable situation and Leanne puts her war paint on to defend her remaining son. That draws in Nick, Sam and it collides into Peter and Carla’s story. It is a grief story but it’s far more than a woman sitting alone feeling alone.

‘The risk is with using the grief as a platform for another story is that it could do a disservice to the Oliver story but our storyliners and writers have pulled off some amazing alchemy and the payoff from the grief will be fantastic watch.’ He added: ‘This is exciting me the most – it will also draw in Rita and a blast from the past for her. It becomes quite high octane and you look back and wonder how you arrived here. It’s taken on a real and life of energy. It will end up in the place you least expect it.’
