Michael van Gerwen admitted he was ‘gutted’ after being knocked out of the World Darts Championships by an inspired Dave Chisnall.

Eighth seed Chisnall produced a brilliant performance to stun world number one Van Gerwen 5-0 and reach the PDC World Championship semi-finals.

The 40-year-old averaged 107, hitting 14 180s, and will face two-time champion Gary Anderson in the last four.

Gerwyn Price beat Daryl Gurney 5-4 in a thriller in this evening’s other quarter-final to set up a semi-final clash with Stephen Bunting.

Reacting to his World Championship exit, Van Gerwen said: ‘It was a difficult match, I knew that before and when Dave is in form you have to work hard to beat him but I didn’t show up.

‘I let myself down and I’m gutted, it’s something to think about in the next few days. It’s the best Dave’s ever played, fair play to him.’

Chisnall added: ‘I’m so proud. I’ve been playing well for the last three or four weeks.

‘This morning when I woke up, I was confident. He didn’t play at his best, he was going above the treble. I’ve been under the radar for the last two years.’
