We’re used to seeing Emmerdale’s Kim Tate issuing orders and ruling the roost at Home Farm. But a new high-stakes storyline will find Gabby Thomas threatening to outmanoeuvre the arch schemer and steal her throne.

‘We’re calling it the battle for Home Farm,’ says actress Claire King, of the upcoming power play between the two characters. ‘And Kim could considerably underestimate Gabby.’

Show bosses are ploughing much of their storytelling energies into this tale of plotting and double dealing, with plans for it to unfold over several months and possibly years.

But the opening salvo comes next week when Gabby attempts to snare Kim’s son Jamie by orchestrating the dismissal of Dawn. In framing Dawn for a crime she didn’t commit, Gabby finds herself on Kim’s radar, who’s impressed by both her duplicity and steely ambition.

‘Kim sees the potential in Gabby,’ continues King, ‘and she thinks she could be manipulated into becoming a useful accomplice.’

But what the conniving business boss hasn’t reckoned on is Gabby’s desire to climb her way to the top – potentially by crushing Kim underfoot in the process.

‘She loves it that Kim sees the potential in her and wants to join her empire,’ says star Rosie Bentham, ‘but this is all about what Gabby can gain for herself. Home Farm offers something new and exciting. She’ll do whatever it takes.’

And when excitement morphs into a ruthless desire by Gabby to control the business, Kim may well find herself the victim of a hostile takeover bid.

‘Kim thinks that she has an ally,’ adds King. ‘Gabby’s bright – that’s why she takes her on. She also senses that she has a dangerous side, but this could end up being to Kim’s detriment.’

The first sign that all may not end up going Kim’s way will come when Gabby learns that she’s pregnant with Jamie’s baby following a one-night stand.

It’s the first of many twists that may well lead to lead to Home Farm coming under new ownership. ‘It wouldn’t be the first time that Kim’s been booted out,’ teases King.

As for what the future holds, it seems that fans can expect some larger-than-life theatrics: ‘You can literally get away with murder on this show. Kim’s camp, OTT and not entirely realistic.

‘But that’s the fun of it. She’s one of the best characters on TV.’
