Marcus Rashford said he was ‘pleased’ to overtake a player of Eric Cantona’s calibre in Manchester United’s list of scorers after scoring his side’s second goal in their record-equalling 9-0 win over Southampton.
It’s the second time in as many seasons Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have lost 9-0, with their miserable defeat at home to Leicester still strong in the memory of Saints supporters. The only other time a team has lost by that margin in the Premier League era was back in 1995, when the Red Devils put nine goals past Ipswich Town.
The visitors got off to a nightmare start at Old Trafford on Tuesday night as Alexandre Jankewitz was shown a straight red card for a horror challenge on Scott McTominay and goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rashford put the hosts in the driving seat in the opening 25 minutes.
Edinson Cavani stuck shortly after Jan Bednarek fired into his own net to put United out of sight before second-half goals from Anthony Martial (2), McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Daniel James completed the rout.
Rashford’s 25th-minute goal was his 83rd in all competitions for United which saw him pass Cantona (82) in the team’s star-studded list of scorers during the Premier League era.
Only Wayne Rooney (253), Ryan Giggs (160), Paul Scholes (155), Ruud van Nistelrooy (150), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (126), Andy Cole (121), Cristiano Ronaldo (118) and David Beckham (85) are above the England forward on that list.
On overtaking Cantona, Rashford told BT Sport: ‘He’s obviously a top player that did a lot for this club so I’m pleased to go past him today.
‘For me, I just want to score more goals and keep helping the team.’
Asked whether the thumping win sent a message to United’s rivals. Rashford replied: ‘We have to not look at them and we focus on ourselves.
‘We’re a team that’s still unproven, we’re not a team that’s been a ready-made team for the last two or three years, I think we’re just getting there now and we’re still learning as a group.
‘So we have to concentrate on ourselves and keep improving and working on ourselves.’
On Rashford passing Cantona, a smiling Solskjaer said: ‘That’s not bad.
‘Eric was a fantastic player to play with, Marcus has got a great career ahead of him and what he’s done this season or this year just shows that he can still focus on his football as well.’
