Rio Ferdinand has slammed Eric Dier for taking down Timo Werner and giving away a penalty in Spurs’ clash at Chelsea.
The defender got in a tangle with Werner in the box and kicked out at the Blues striker while on the floor, giving referee Andre Marriner no choice but to award a spot-kick.
Jorginho netted from 12 yards to give Chelsea a deserved lead after 24 minutes in what was a dominant half from Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Spurs could barely get hold of the ball and looked short of ideas on the rare ocassions that they tried to venture forward.
Speaking to BT Sport at half-time, Ferdinand criticised Dier for his costly error and couldn’t believe the lack of intensity shown from the north Londoners.
‘Silly, silly decision from Dier, silly mistake,’ the Manchester United legend said.
‘That Tottenham team and Jose, they’re lucky there’s no fans in that stadium.
‘They’d have been booed off. They were poor.
‘There was no shape, zero press on the ball. It’s like a testimonial for them [Chelsea] they’re probably thinking how are we actually sitting here getting no pressure on the ball.
‘I just feel that the Spurs team are just sitting there and just relying on Son, an individual to create one moment in the game.
‘There’s no method, I’m not seeing any patterns of play in this game. It just seems like a team who don’t have any idea of what they’re doing without the ball.’
Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jermain Jenas was also extremely critical of his former side’s performance in the first period.
‘There is no plan, that’s the problem, I’m watching a group of players who look scared, who don’t want to get on the ball,’ he added.
‘That’s one of the biggest crimes you can have as a footballer.’
