Ronnie O’Sullivan fell at the semi-final stage of Group 5 of the Championship League to Kyren Wilson on Thursday as he failed to keep up the sensational form he showed the previous day.

The Rocket was fantastic on Wednesday, beating Joe Perry and Wilson 3-0, before downing Ali Carter and Mark Selby 3-1, rattling in three consecutive centuries (125, 124 and 140) in the clash with Selby.

It was an entirely different day out for the world champion on Thursday, though, as he lost his final two group stage matches to Mark Williams and Barry Hawkins, both 3-1.

His wins on Wednesday were enough to get him into the semi-finals, but the 45-year-old could not snap back into winning ways and was downed by the Warrior, although it took an excellent display from Wilson to do so.

Breaks of 132, 128 and 83 gave Wilson a 3-2 victory, with O’Sullivan making a break of 132 himself as he claimed his second frame.

Wilson went on to play Mark Williams in the group final, with the winner progressing to the Winners’ Group at the end of March and the loser returning for Group 6.

It is not curtains for the Rocket in the event as he is set to return on Friday and Saturday for Group 6 of the Championship League, where he will be joined by new arrivals David Gilbert, Liang Wenbo and Anthony McGill,

Perry finished fifth so also progresses, as does the other beaten semi-finalist Carter, but Hawkins and Selby drop out of the tournament.

Group 6 is played this week with Group 7 coming on 30-31 March before the Winners’ Group on the next two days.

Already having booked their places in the Winners’ Group before Thursday were Zhou Yuelong, Graeme Dott, John Higgins and Judd Trump.

All the players involved this week are back in ranking event action at the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor in Newport, starting on Monday, with £70,000 on offer for the winner.
