Roy Keane has made a surprise arrival on Instagram, with his first post being a heart-warming selfie alongside his dog.
The Manchester United legend has never been a fan of social media and has criticised players for taking selfies in the past, but appears to be finally coming round to the idea.
Unsurprisingly Keane’s appearance on Instagram has been very popular, with his official account racking up around 400,000 followers just three hours after posting his first picture.
A smiling and hooded Keane may have looked quite menacing were it not for the presence of his dog and the caption he added, which read: ‘A man’s best friend.’
Keane has always been a great lover of dogs, with his faithful pet Triggs becoming something of a celebrity during his Manchester United days.
Speaking at a Guide Dog charity event in 2015 Keane said: ‘Growing up in Cork we always had dogs and then when I went to England, with the pressure of matches, I always found spending time with my dogs a great way to relax,” he said.
‘I have two dogs at the moment, a German Shepherd and a Labrador and they are a massive part of my family. I’d be lost without them, they are a massive part of our lives.’
Posing with a dog may not be much of a surprise for the Irishman, but posing at all is a bit of a shock given his comments on selfies in the past.
The 49-year-old once blamed selfies for Arsenal’s inability to win a Premier League title in recent years.
‘They’ve lots of good players,’ he said. ‘But it’s about having a good team, characters who roll their sleeves up, not just those trying to get their pictures every day of the week, selfies. Selfies will hold them back.’
