Warning: spoilers ahead for The Bay series two episode three.

Amy James-Kelly, who plays Grace Marshbrook on ITV crime drama The Bay, has spoken out about the devastating ending of the latest episode, revealing the extreme reaction her boyfriend had to the cliffhanger.

In the final scene of The Bay series two episode three, police detective Med Kharim (Taheen Modak) is investigating several suspicious properties connected to the law firm run by the family of the recently-murdered Stephen Marshbrook (Stephen Tompkinson).

While Med is on the phone to lead character Lisa Armstrong (Morven Christie), a motorbike abruptly crosses his path, causing him to take a step back before a car unexpectedly – and purposely – hits him in the middle of the road.

As Med falls to the ground, he is unable to say another word as the car reverses over him, leaving viewers questioning if he is still alive.

During a recent conversation with Metro.co.uk, Amy, 25, recalled watching the scene with her boyfriend, who was desperate to find out whether Med survived the shocking hit-and-run.

Amy said that she thinks the incident is ‘going to be the biggest talking point’ now that the episode has aired.

‘I remember we watched episode three and we had to go out and walk the dogs, and my boyfriend practically ran the route because he was like, “No, I have to get back, Med’s on the floor, I have to find out what’s going on.” He couldn’t wrap his head around it,’ Amy said.

The former Coronation Street actor added that she couldn’t bear to listen to the moment that the car runs over Med, even though she ‘knew it was coming’.

‘I had to plug my ears,’ she admitted.

Her boyfriend, on the other hand, realised that something bad was about to happen, as he noticed that she was ‘looking away’ from the screen.

Earlier on in the episode, the audience learnt a bit more about Grace’s fragmented relationship with her family, who she is no longer in contact with, with the exception of her mother, Rose (Sharon Small).

During a conversation with Lisa, Grace admits that while she confessed to stealing her grandfather’s car several years back, it was actually her brother Jamie (Jack Archer) who committed the crime, with her family urging her to take the fall for it.

Amy believes that episode three is a ‘real turning point’ for the character, ‘because she’s obviously stuck between a rock and a hard place’.

The Military Wives star referenced the fact that in Grace’s chat with Lisa, she discusses employing people who ‘need a leg up’ at the scrapyard where she works.

‘She looks out for the little man. She has been taken into this family of outcasts and she’s now doing the same thing for them,’ she said, noting that Grace’s boss, Frank (Owen McDonnell) is particularly ‘protective’ over her.

‘I think she’s just trying to figure out what her life looks like. She’s only in her early twenties.

‘That’s a time when everybody’s kind of having their quarter life crisis anyway, on top of having such a difficult past and an unstable home life, where she was literally told, “You mean nothing, you have to take the rap for this because we’ve got nothing riding on you, everything’s riding on your brother.”

‘To hear that when you’re in your youth and then to not really know what direction you’re going in in your early twenties is a big, big thing.’

The Bay continues next Wednesday at 9pm on ITV and is available to watch on ITV Player.
