Thomas Tuchel announced himself as a managerial force in the Premier League as his Chelsea side battled to a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to London rivals Tottenham.
Eric Dier’s clumsy foul on Timo Werner handed the visitors a golden opportunity to take the lead and Jorginho made no mistake with the resulting penalty, arrowing his strike low and hard to Hugo Lloris’ right in the 24th minute.
Spurs, without their talisman Harry Kane, struggled to create much else across the 90 minutes but Serge Aurier put the ball on a plate for Carlos Vinicius right at the death, who rose well but sent his header wide.
It was a frantic opening period at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Werner looped a header over the crossbar before Eduoard Mendy denied Son Heung-min with a smart save.
Tottenham’s best chance of the first half fell to Aurier in the dying moments but the Ivorian headed wide and Jose Mourinho’s men appeared to be lacking in ideas across what was a lacklustre performance.
Spurs captain Lloris was at the heart of the action again in the 67th minute as he stretched well to nudge the ball away from an onrushing Christian Pulisic.
The Frenchman then saw Mateo Kovacic fire wide of his right post after a scything run through a static Tottenham defence.
Carlos Vinicius and Eric Dier both fluffed late opportunities to equalise and Son also snatched at a chance but Chelsea held on to secure victory – despite only having two shots on target in north London – and the result means Tuchel is still unbeaten since replacing Frank Lampard.
Meanwhile, Tottenham’s defeat was their third straight loss in the league for first time since as far back as 2012. Mourinho had never previously lost back-to-back home matches as manager in the English top flight.
