UK to be battered with more rain in ‘one of wettest Mays on record’

The UK will be battered with more rain over the next few weeks in what could be one of the wettest Mays on record.

A total of 91% of the expected rainfall for the month – 63.5mm – had fallen across the country by Friday.

Downpours are expected to continue throughout May, setting the scene to potentially challenge the wettest May on record, when 131.7mm of rain fell in 1967.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said it will be a ‘notably wet month even if the record is not broken’.

Monday will likely see heavy showers with a risk of thunder, as people across England sit inside in groups of six and share hugs for the first time in months.

Mr Keates says it will be ‘sunglasses one minute and umbrellas the next’, as the weather changes between sunshine and showers throughout the day.

He added: ‘If you can go in, it might be the best option.’

The Met forecaster said there is hope for drier weather at the end of the month into June.

He said: ‘If you were to extrapolate what we’ve had so far and say the second half of the month was similar to the first, then you would probably be challenging a record wet May.

‘On the basis that a fair amount of rain is probably quite likely over the next couple of weeks, it’s probably going to be up there.

‘There are hints, however, as we move towards the turn of the month into June of perhaps a bit of a dry trend. So some tentative glimmers of light at the end of the tunnel.’
