Coleen Nolan slams government extending lockdown restrictions: ‘I don’t trust them anymore’

Colleen Nolan slams government extending lockdown restrictions

Coleen Nolan has slammed the government for extending lockdown restrictions, revealing that she’s completely lost faith.

Today’s Loose Women panel – which also included Ruth Langsford, Frankie Bridge and Jane Moore – discussed Boris Johnson delaying England’s ‘freedom day’ by one month.

Johnson has pushed back the date until July 19 due to the new Covid variants spreading around the UK.

It is hoped that the four-week delay will buy the country more time to tackle the sharp rise in cases of the Delta variant to ensure that when measures lift they are ‘irreversible’.

Coleen was quick to criticise the government for making the decision.

‘I just don’t trust them anymore…I’ve always been on Boris’ side when everyone’s been having a go I’ve been like, “He’s doing his best, they don’t know what they’re dealing with, I’d hate to be in his shoes”,’ she said.

‘But now I don’t trust you because you keep changing the narrative and keep changing the goalposts.’

She went on to say that the government has flip-flopped when it comes to their approach to coronavirus.

‘[They once said] once we get the elderly and the most vulnerable we can start relaxing, we don’t need to worry about the young people…It’s just something different every time and I’m fed up with it.’

Coleen told the panel that her son, Shane Junior, had lost 22 gigs within 20 minutes of the announcement. This is a major blow financially for him, especially as he’s getting married next year.

She added: ‘No one seems to care about that really.’

Jane said that even though it doesn’t affect her personally, she agreed it was ‘a bit of a let down’.

‘For me it doesn’t make much difference but I’m not getting married, I haven’t just rearranged my wedding for the second or third time,’ she said.

‘I don’t work for hospitality, I don’t work for travel, I don’t work for entertainment. Obviously, we’ve all been working but for theatres I mean. So for all of those people, it’s absolutely devastating news and the logic of it I’m still not sure about.’

Delaying the ease of restrictions means nightclubs will remain closed, mask-wearing will continue in public places and working from home advice will stay in place.

Despite the outrage, Freedom Day was never set in stone, as the government previously advised that this was the earliest date that restrictions would ease.

Loose Women viewers took to Twitter to point this out.

‘The date always had the potential to change,’ one person wrote.

Another posted: ‘Coleen it’s not Boris Johnson’s fault he goes by advice.’

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
