The man in charge of England vs Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2020 on Tuesday afternoon is 38-year-old Dutchman Danny Makkelie, who splits his time between refereeing and police work.

Makkelie was born in Curacao, but moved to Netherlands as a child and took up refereeing from an early age.

He also took on a career in the police and remains a police inspector in Rotterdam, despite taking charge of some of the biggest games in world football.

The 38-year-old has been refereeing Europa League games since 2011 and Champions League matches since 2012, taking charge of games including Premier League sides on a number of occasions.

These have included Chelsea’s draw at Real Madrid in the Champions League this year and Liverpool’s memorable 3-2 defeat against Atletico Madrid at Anfield in March last year.

At Euro 2020 so far he has refereed two matches, Italy’s 3-0 win over Turkey and Russia beating Finland 1-0.

As something of a guide, he handed out two yellow cards in the Italy vs Turkey contest and five as Russia downed the Finns.

The Dutchman is certainly not afraid to dish out the cards if required, sending off a player from each side by the hour mark in a feisty clash between Feyenood and Ajax in the Eredivisie just last month.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg is a fan of Makkelie’s work and believes he is one of the finest young officials in the game, especially in dealing with VAR.

‘Danny Makkelie is a real talent and someone who adapted better than most to the introduction of VAR,’ Clattenburg wrote for the Daily Mail.

‘Holland was one of the first countries to work with the technology, so Makkelie’s experience of the system is second to none.

‘He was one of the video assistants working the World Cup final in 2018.

‘I’ve worked with Makkelie in Greece – he oversaw the final of the Greek Cup in Athens in May – and he’s shown in his Champions League appointments how he’s become one of Europe’s top operators.’
