A pet parrot is recovering in hospital after swallowing 21 diamonds.
Sun parakeet Frosty raided its owner’s jewellery box and plucked the stones from a stunning diamond-encrusted necklace on Tuesday.
The bird was said to have been attracted by the glimmering stones in Bangkok, Thailand and decided to hoover them up for breakfast.
By the afternoon, the eight-month-old appeared to have lost its appetite.
Frosty seemed weak, would not eat and was showing signs of stomach ache.
Fortunately, the woman lives near the Animal Space Hospital in the Thai capital and was able to book Frosty in for an X-ray.
To her amazement, vets found small bead-like objects on its stomach and took the bird into theatre for an emergency operation.
Dr Kuntita Paveenasakorn, from the hospital, estimated that each of the 21 diamonds was around 0.2 carats.
He said: ‘This kind of bird is attracted to things that glitter. We see this kind of situation a lot but this case was strange because the parrot ate lots of valuable diamonds.
‘The tiny things inside his stomach were sharp which caused the parrot to have stomach aches.
‘They could have wounded its organs if the owner did not bring the bird to us.’
The parrot was sedated before its small stomach was opened to remove the diamonds.
The delicate operation took more than two hours.
After surgery, vets recovered 21 diamond beads that were from the woman’s necklace.
Frosty will have to stay at the hospital for at least a week until the stitch wounds heal.
The bird is expected to be discharged by the end of the month.
