Protesters have been filmed hurling tennis balls with messages on them towards Downing Street while chanting ‘Get Boris out!’

Large crowds have gathered in London on the day coronavirus restrictions were originally intended to end.

June 21 was set out as the point people would be able to meet in large groups again, among other changes.

However, the prime minister pushed the date back to July 19 citing concerns over the new and more infectious Delta variant, first identified in India.

The Metropolitan Police tweeted that there was a demonstration taking place in London’s Parliament Square and along Whitehall.

They said officers including mounted police were at the scene.

Police were also filmed trying to hold back anti-lockdown protesters.

‘We are engaging with a crowd gathering on Bridge Street, #Westminster who are blocking traffic and being obstructive and hostile to officers,’ Scotland Yard said.

‘Eight arrests have been made so far. We are working to keep traffic moving and minimise disruption to the local community.’

This is a developing story. More to follow.
