Chelsea legend Petr Cech has slammed the ‘incomprehensible’ Covid-19 protocols that have forced Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount into self-isolation on the day of England’s group stage clash against Czech Republic.
The Chelsea pair will miss tonight’s game after guidance from Public Health England stipulated that the duo came into close contact with Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour, who has tested positive for coronavirus.
Though the entire England squad have returned negative results since the game on Friday night, Chilwell and Mount were deemed to have come into close contact with Gilmour as they spoke to their Chelsea team-mate for roughly 22 minutes in the tunnel after the 0-0 draw at Wembley.
While England could well manage without the duo for tonight’s game, their self-isolation period means they will only be available on the day of England’s proposed last-16 tie on June 29th.
The decision has left many baffled, particularly as not one of Gilmour’s team-mates have been asked to self-isolate.
And Cech has summed up the mood of the nation by blasting the ‘incomprehensible’ rules.
‘Please could someone help me understand how is it possible Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell – both with negative tests – have to isolate after they got in contact with Billy Gilmour while the entire Scottish team who shared the dressing room, hotel, coach and plane while travelling, dinning room, meeting room is allowed to play the game without any problem because they returned the required negative tests?,’ asked Cech on his Instagram page.
‘What is the difference between them returning the same test results? It is incomprehensible…’
Chilwell is yet to start in the tournament but Mount has been selected for both of England’s opening two games.
Jack Grealish is expected to be handed a start in Mount’s absence, while Luke Shaw could continue at left-back having started against Scotland.
Gareth Southgate could select Harry Maguire to start, with the Manchester United captain now fit again after nearly two months on the sidelines with an ankle injury.
