PlayStation showcase featuring Final Fantasy 16 rumoured in a ‘couple more weeks’

Following a lack of Final Fantasy 16 news at E3, a leaker believes a proper update will arrive in a couple of weeks.

While Square Enix’s E3 2021 showcase did see an announcement for a spin-off game by Team Ninja, titled Stranger Of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, the next mainline entry in the series, Final Fantasy 16, was conspicuously absent.

There was naturally some disappointment from those hoping to learn more about the game, considering Square Enix has shown no new footage since its debut trailer, but if the latest rumours are to be believed, the wait may not be that much longer.

According to insider Navtra on ResetEra, an update on Final Fantasy 16 will arrive in a couple of weeks’ time – assuming plans haven’t changed. The implication being that it will be part of a new Sony showcase.

Navtra is considered a reliable source of information, having correctly shared some details on the aforementioned Final Fantasy Origin before its announcement.

And since Final Fantasy 16 is being touted as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, it’s possible that Square Enix didn’t share new info at its E3 presentation because it’s saving it for a Sony event.

Sony may not be taking part in E3 again this year, but it’s widely believed that it will hold one of its State of Play showcases, or something similar, in the summer.

If it is, the next question is whether it’ll highlight a variety of games or if it will focus entirely on Final Fantasy 16, similar to the last State of Play which was all about Horizon Forbidden Dawn.

With Microsoft planning a second showcase on Thursday, and a more detailed look at Halo Infinite multiplayer on Monday, Sony may be following their usual pattern of making sure their showcase is after Microsoft’s – so that they can directly respond to their announcements if necessary.

Final Fantasy 16 is in development for PlayStation 5.
