RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under’s Elektra Shock has said that the bitchiness on the show was sometimes so hard to take that she’d go back to the hotel room and cry after filming.
The New Zealand-based drag queen became the latest star to be eliminated from the competition just one episode before the final, leaving Art Simone, Karen From Finance, Kita Mean and Scarlet Adams to battle it out to be crowned the first winner.
Since the show began airing in May, the fandom has picked up on the overt level of shade between the contestants and Elektra – real name James Luck – confirmed to Metro.co.uk that it was ‘very’ bitchy.
‘I think especially for me, being very aware of what I look like, to have all of these beautiful drag queens to be like, “you’re sh*t”, was very tough,’ she told us.
‘The fandom loves drama, they love a bit of shade and we want to do that too, we’re not shying away from having conversations or telling people what we really think when we’re there.’
But the critiques did become hard for Elektra to deal with and ate away at her.
‘I would put on a brave face and then I would go to my hotel room and cry,’ she recalled. ‘You start to give up. And that’s not what you want when you’re competing for one of the biggest prizes.
‘It was hard and it brought up a lot of stuff that I thought wasn’t relevant to Drag Race and wasn’t relevant to what I was trying to do or what I was trying to become and made me deal with James’s issues.’
However, Elektra said that eventually enough was enough and she was able to channel the critiques into becoming an ‘unstoppable underdog’.
‘I believed it for the first three weeks of the competition and then I just thought, no, f*ck this, RuPaul saw something in me,’ she said. ‘It might not have been my wigs, it might not have been my make-up, it might not have been my costumes, but there’s something in me that deserves to be here so I’m just going to start backing that person.
‘What was amazing about going through that sh*t was being able to apply it to Elektra,’ she said. ‘I feel like a different queen now.’
Elektra stressed that by no means is she throwing the other queens under the bus by being forthright with her experiences of the shadiness of Drag Race Down Under.
‘I don’t think that they’re horrible,’ she highlighted. ‘Drag Race makes you do crazy, crazy things.
‘Shade is funny and a bit of bitchiness on the show is fabulous, we love a fight, but we are, at the end of the day, a community of people who need to help, uplift and support each other.
‘That should be the focus.’
Drag Race Down Under airs every Sunday on BBC iPlayer.
