Ruth Jones and Rob Brydon are working on a new BBC festive comedy special… but don’t get your hopes up for another Christmassy karaoke session with Nessa and Bryn.

The Gavin and Stacey co-stars have been filming Ray & Gaynor – a one-off show about a pair of old friends – in the Scottish Highlands and it is expected to air at Christmas.

A source told The Daily Mirror newspaper: ‘It’s a festive half-hour comedy for this year starring Ruth and Rob, who are old friends, in the title roles as Ray and Gaynor.

‘Everyone is delighted to have a little bit of Gavin & Stacey on the BBC this Christmas. Even if it doesn’t have Gavin. Or Stacey.’

The show is being made by Tidy Productions – the company Ruth runs with her producer husband David Peet.

The news will surely delight fans of the pair, although some may be disappointed that we’ll be passing yet another Christmas without a Gavin and Stacey special.

Ruth wrote the sitcom, about an Essex lad and a Welsh woman who have a whirlwind romance, with James Corden, as well as starring as Nessa Jenkins, while Rob plays Uncle Bryn.

The show returned after nearly a decade away in 2019, as we saw the gang spend Christmas in Barry.

And the episode ended on a major cliffhanger, as Nessa got down on one knee and asked Smithy (James Corden) to marry her, with the credits rolling before he answered.

Another special is a long way off, but James has hinted that we may get to see the aftermath at some point.

He explained: ‘As it stands right now, there aren’t any plans to do one, but that’s not to say that there isn’t the want or the inclination to do one… that special ends on such a … it’s so open-ended that I think it would be a shame to leave it there.

‘That’s certainly my feeling and I think Ruth feels the same. It doesn’t feel like the end of a book, it feels like the end of a chapter, so I do feel like if we ever did another one that would be the end of it.’
