Arsenal and Liverpool are showing interest in signing Renato Sanches from cash-strapped Ligue 1 champions Lille, according to L’Equipe.
The 23-year-old midfielder joined Bayern Munich from Benfica in a €35million deal five years ago, but failed to settle in Germany and made little impact during a brief loan spell at Swansea.
Sanches eventually joined Lille two years ago and has rebuilt his reputation in more modest surroundings, and played a key role in last season’s unlikely title success.
Portugal endured an indifferent Euros campaign, exiting the competition earlier this week following a narrow defeat against Belgium, but Sanches emerged with credit after a series of impressive displays.
Despite their success last season, Lille are likely to sell several of their prize assets this summer and have already sanctioned the departure of Boubakary Soumare, who joined Leicester City on Friday.
Arsenal have a strong relationship with Lille having completed deals for Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Magalhaes in the last two summer windows, and the Brazilian invited his former teammate to join him in north London with a leading message on Instagram earlier this week.
Mikel Arteta will need to strengthen his midfield engine room this summer with Granit Xhaka set to leave for Roma, while Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have already been deemed surplus to requirements.
Guendouzi spent last season on loan to Hertha Berlin, but is on the verge of joining Marseille, along with fellow exiled young Frenchman, William Saliba, while Torreira had been in negotiations with Lazio.
Similarly, Liverpool are in need of a new central midfielder after Gini Wijnaldum opted to leave as a free agent and join Paris Saint-Germain.
