The UK has recorded more than 30,000 new Covid cases in a single day for the first time since January.
Today’s daily figures show another 32,548 people have tested positive for the virus in the latest 24 hour period.
There have also been another 33 deaths, taking the overall death toll to 128,301.
It comes as the country prepares to come out of lockdown, with all legal restrictions set to end on July 19. minister has warned the easing of rules could push cases up to 50,000 or even 100,000 every day.
Today’s total is more than double what it was just over a week ago. On June 27, there were just under 15,000 new cases reported.
It’s also a 42.8% increase week-on-week with nearly 200,000 cases recorded in the last seven days alone.
Although deaths remain low, that figure is also creeping up. The 161 deaths recorded in the last seven days is 42.5% higher than the week before.
Some 386 people were hospitalised with the virus on July 3, the latest date for which figures are available.
Despite the spiralling number of cases, the Government is pressing ahead with plans to end lockdown as it’s thought the vaccines have made the virus a lot less dangerous.
But many are concerned that getting rid of all measures when cases are so high is ‘reckless.’
On the positive side, there were 238,937 doses of a vaccine administered in the latest 24 hour period and 64.6% of the population have now had both doses.
Around nine in 10 adults in most parts of the UK are now likely to have Covid-19 antibodies, the latest figures show.
The Office for National Statistics said all parts of the UK now have a higher proportion of people with antibodies as a result of either prior infection or vaccination.
