The filmmakers behind Framing Britney Spears have announced the release of a follow-up documentary airing tonight.

Controlling Britney Spears will be available on Hulu and FX as the team further explores the conservatorship that has controlled the pop star’s life since 2008.

Speaking on Friday’s Good Morning America, co-creator Liz Day explained: ‘In the documentary, this insider has come forward and has revealed a portrait of the way the conservatorship monitored and managed nearly every aspect of Britney’s life for the past 13 years.

‘When [Britney’s father] Jamie was appointed Britney’s conservator back in 2008, he was given the authority to hire security for Britney 24/7 and no one really knew what they did.’

She continued: ‘They’d be in the background of photos with Britney. But the level of control and the ways that they monitored and surveilled her, we certainly didn’t know. I don’t know that anyone ever knew before.’

Co-creator Samantha Stark added that she and Day also received court documents involving the Toxic singer’s conservatorship that show how the singer ‘had been expressing to the court she wanted out far earlier than anybody knew.’

Liz explained how Britney’s bombshell testimony in June ‘motivated’ people to come forward and to support her story as Samantha added: ‘I think Britney speaking was really powerful. These people in the film reached out to us because they wanted to share their story because they heard Britney speak.’

Insiders featured in the follow-up include a former member of the security team which monitored Spears for nine years.

The former security team member alleges he was told to wipe a flash drive containing ‘extremely sensitive’ information. However, the order raised ‘so many red flags’ and he chose to ‘keep a copy’ because he didn’t want to delete any evidence.

Framing Britney Spears stunned viewers as it showcased the singer’s early career and subsequent ‘breakdown’ that lead to the ongoing conservatorship held by her father Jamie Spears.

The eye-opening retrospective – which comes as part of The New York Times presents TV series – looked back at some of the singer’s disturbing earlier interviews as a teen star being probed about her breasts and sex life.

The New York Times Presents: Controlling Britney Spears premieres September 24 on FX and Hulu in the US.
