Rio Ferdinand explains reason why Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku struggled at Man Utd

Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United’s instability meant Romelu Lukaku was unable to find his best form during his time at the club.

The Belgian endured mixed fortunes during his two years with the Red Devils. Under Jose Mourinho in his first season he netted 27 goals in 51 games to help his side finish second in the Premier League and reach the FA Cup final.

But his second season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his form decline and the initial five-year contract he signed came to an early end as he was sold to Inter Milan in 2019.

In Serie A, Lukaku rediscovered his form as he helped fire Inter to Serie A glory last season that soon led to speculation of a return to the Premier League.

Both United and Chelsea were linked with a move for the 28-year-old but Lukaku had unfinished business at the Blues having featured for the club as a teenager.

Former United defender Ferdinand believes Lukaku would be thriving at his old side if he was at the club now though, citing United’s instability previously as the reason for his struggles.

‘Sometimes it’s about the club fitting the player and the player fitting that club at the right time,’ Ferdinand told BT Sport ahead of United’s clash with Aston Villa this afternoon.

‘I think the timing wasn’t right for him at Man United. The stability they have now wasn’t there when he was there.

‘If it was now it would be very different – I think he’d be doing what he’s doing here [at Chelsea].

‘He went away under a cloud at Man United and has come back an animal and someone you can count on to win you trophies.’

Despite scoring four goals in all competitions for Chelsea this season, Lukaku fired a blank for the third game in a row as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at Stamford Bridge today.

United dropped points at Old Trafford too as Villa scored a late winner courtesy of Kortney Hause to record a 1-0 win.
