Strictly Come Dancing may have only started a week ago, but Nina Wadia has already found out the hard way that it’s no walk in the park.
The actress has said her body is ‘being held together by tape’, and that she was unprepared for how gruelling training for Strictly’s live shows would be.
Nina is hitting the ballroom to be scored for the first time with partner Neil Jones, performing a samba to Mi Gente by J Balvin, Willy William ft Beyoncé, and she admitted rehearsing has been a ‘wake-up call to my body’.
The 52-year-old told the Daily Mirror: ‘My back is all taped up, my hip flexors are sore, I’ve got plasters all over my feet. Neil makes me wear the heels for training and when I take them off at the end of the day my feet are so swollen I can’t get them back in my sneakers. I’m a bit of a mess, to be honest.’
She added: ‘I genuinely did not know how much hard work it was going to be.
‘I know it sounds extremely naive, but you watch people do it and you’re like, “Oh my God, if they can do it, surely I can?” And then you go, “They must’ve worked really hard.” It’s insanely tough.’
Thankfully for Nina’s taped-up body, there’s a physio on hand to help her strengthen her muscles, and she is throwing herself into the Strictly experience.
The Goodness Gracious Me star said that she wants to show that women in their 50s shouldn’t be written off because of their age, and hopes to have ‘the most fun I can possibly have’.
Nina is this year’s oldest female celebrity, while actor Greg Wise – paired with Katya Jones – is the oldest male, at 55.
But when it comes to Strictly, age is just a number, as Bill Bailey became champion last year at the age of 55, while partnered with Oti Mabuse.
Nina and Greg join John Whaite, Rose Ayling-Ellis, Ugo Monye, Dan Walker, Robert Webb, Judi Love, Sara Davies, AJ Odudu, Adam Peaty, Rhys Stephenson, Tilly Ramsay, Katie McGlynn and Tom Fletcher as the 15 celebs taking to the floor tonight for the first live show of the series.
Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse are back to hand out the scores, and are joined by former pro Anton Du Beke, who is taking a place on the panel in Bruno Tonioli’s absence.
Strictly kicks off at 7pm on BBC One.
