A murder victim’s children found her body – then texted their grandparents saying: ‘Come over, red stuff all over the floor and think mom is dead.’ Cora Nickel’s daughters, aged just five and eight, sent the harrowing text after discovering the 27 year-old dead on the floor of her home in San Antonio, Texas, on August 20.
They had gotten up to try and find their mother, only to stumble across her remains laying on the floor.
Cora’s mom Lynette Robinson rushed to the scene, put her granddaughters in her car, then went inside the family’s home to find her daughter laying dead in a pool of blood. Robinson said Cora’s body was cold to the touch, with a coroner later ruling that the mom of two had died of a gunshot wound.
Nickel’s boyfriend Jorge Izquierdo, 29, has since been arrested and charged with Cora’s murder, which police are treating as a domestic abuse killing. The couple are said to have argued after going to a family gathering at Izquierdo’s mom’s house the night before, which culminated in Cora asking him to leave their home.
Izquierdo – who is the father of Cora’s children – reportedly shot her dead while their daughters were at home, then fled the scene and left his little girls to find their mother’s bloodied corpse, according to mySA.
A GoFundMe page set up to help Cora’s children said she’d just completed a masters degree, and was looking forward to embarking on a career that would help her provide for her daughters.
The alleged killer reportedly sparked concerns the next day after sending his mother a message that left her fearing for his wellbeing. He later called his sister telling them he was in Oxnard, California, and asked them to come and pick him up.
Izquierdo was arrested the same day, and has since been extradited back to Texas. He is being held in jail in lieu of $200,000 bond ahead of his next court appearance.
