Andy Murray was understandably knackered after his epic four hours and 40 minutes win over Yoshihito Nishioka and revealed he would be lobbying US Open organisers for an ’emergency ice bath’.

Murray looked down and out when two sets and a break down to the Japanese world No. 49 but rallied back to an incredible 4-6 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win on his return to Grand Slam action.

He required treatment on his big toe at the end of a gruelling fourth set but recovered from another break back in the decider to clinch another famous win.

‘I’m tired,’ Murray said on court after the match. ‘My toes are the worst part. Big toes on both sides are pretty beat up. But I did alright.

‘Physically at the beginning of the match, I was apprehensive about playing a long match because I hadn’t played one for a long time.

‘Once I got two sets down I had to start putting the afterburners on and managed to get through.

‘I was hitting my forehand better as the match went on, dictating more points with that. I think I served fairly well at the end, maybe not so well at the beginning. I had to change a few things, for sure.’

The US Open are not freely allowing the on site ice bath to be used amid coronavirus restrictions on site, but Murray planned to plea with organisers to let him in.

‘They have one in the locker room and they said it’s for emergencies… for me, this is an emergency right now,’ added Murray.

‘My body hurts. I need to recover as best as possible. I’ll ask and see if they’ll allow me to use it.

‘If not, I’ll try to get back at the hotel as quickly as possible and get in one at the hotel.

‘But I need to rest up and try to recover as best I can as that’s by far the most tennis I’ve played since 2019 when I played Bautista at the Aussie Open so I’ll need to recover well.’
