Sheridan Smith fronted her very own documentary Becoming Mum tonight, and the actress was praised by viewers at home for hosting an open and honest discussion about her mental health struggles during pregnancy.
Joined by her fiance Jamie Horn, the one-off film chronicled Sheridan’s pregnancy with her first child, Billy.
Throughout, Sheridan discussed her relationship with mental health, including her struggles with depression and anxiety and her efforts to overcome them, touching on emotional moments such as the death of her father and pulling out of performing in Funny Girl in the West End.
And for those watching at home, the honest portrayal of Sheridan’s journey (both before and during lockdown) was a must-watch.
‘Normalising the need for emotional support during pregnancy and post-labour is so important,’ one viewer said.
Actress Emily Atack also praised Sheridan, writing: ‘One of the best talents we have and so much love in that heart of yours.
‘Being honest about your struggles will help so many people. You’re a legend.’
Another added: ‘Congratulations Sheridan and Jamie on your beautiful baby boy. A refreshing, honest and supportive insight about pregnancy and mental health.
‘Well done for highlighting the worries, anxieties and experiences of pregnant women.’
In another bracing part of the documentary, Sheridan also revealed that she experienced five seizures after quickly stopping taking anti-anxiety medication.
The episode came after the actress was made the subject of a joke by Graham Norton at that year’s Baftas, where she was left extremely embarrassed.
But Becoming Mum wasn’t the only project the Gavin and Stacey star took on during her pregnancy.
She was also seen on-screen, just weeks from giving birth, in the quickly-shot Isolation Stories, where she portrayed a heavily-pregnant expectant mum who was struggling with loneliness in lockdown.
Sheridan Smith: Becoming Mum aired on ITV.
