Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum hopes to stay at the club and would be open to signing a new long-term deal.

The Dutchman, 29, has attracted attention from Barcelona this summer with Ronald Koeman keen to sign the midfielder, who he worked with during his time as Netherlands boss.

Wijnaldum has a year left on his contract with Liverpool and talks have stalled over an extension, despite a willingness on all sides to resolve the situation.

The Dutchman is a popular member in the dressing room and he is admired by Jurgen Klopp, who has told his board to sort a deal for the former Newcastle ace.

However, while many fans fear that interest from Barcelona has turned Wijnaldum’s head, the Telegraph report that he wants to stay at Anfield and hopes for a resolution in negotiations with the club’s board.

The hold-up is believed to be over the length of the deal that Liverpool are offering the 29-year-old and Barcelona are willing to hand him an initial three-year deal with the option of a further 12 months to take him to his 34th birthday.

Klopp is also wary of the fact that he must sell a senior player before adding to his squad again this summer and Wijnaldum’s departure would allow him to purchase Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

The Germans want £27m for the Spain international and Liverpool would likely recoup a similar amount for Wijnaldum from Barcelona, as well as freeing up a space in the midfield for Thaigo.
